The baby trek as it is popularly known passes through the Sham region of
the Trans-Himalayan Ladakh. Compared to Markha Valley trek, or Stok Kangri
expedition or DzoJongo trek, Sham trek is much shorter and easier making it the
perfect trek circuit for trekkers who does not have much time on hand along
with much needed experience for other treks. This trek however short it may be
is much tiering because of the altitude of the region (4000 meters above sea
level).
This trek circuit, for most of the time, passes through beautiful
villages, resided by locals, untouched by the harsh modern world. This trek is
the only trek where you will get an amazing experience of the pure form of
Ladakh in the shortest of time span. Because of its shorter duration and the
opportunity to see traditional Ladakhi village life, this is a really
gratifying trip. The circuit crosses through villages like, Likir, Yangthang,
Hemis Shukpachan, and Temisgam each with its own kind of beauty and wonders.

Day 1
Arrive in Leh
You will reach Leh via air/or road (only for summers). You will be greeted by snow-capped mountains, high peaks lovely breeze. Most probably you will be staying in a hotel/guesthouse/homestay in the main city of Leh. Unpack here and rest for a while. Remember to keep yourself adequately warm and hydrated as there would be a considerable drop in the level of oxygen. To adapt to the weather of Leh, go for a stroll around Leh market or even the countryside area. Explore the nearby areas, you can even go for shopping in Leh market. However, do not travel to high altitude area on the same day as you might get AMS (acute mountain sickness) which if get worse might even become deadly.

Day 2
Leh-Likir-Yangthang via Phobe La (11,745 ft) and Chagatse La (12,171ft)
You will drive from Leh to Likir which is about 2.5 hours from Leh. Form Likir you will start your trekking. Today you will be crossing two passes the Phobe La and Chagatse La. The route travels west from Likir and climbs to Phobe La. (3580m). Once you cross this pass you will see Sumdo village. A small village, raw and unexplored. Sumdo settlement is located beyond this. From here you will hike upwards until you reach the Chagatse pass. Once you cross this pass you will reach your first stop; Yangthang village(3630m). you will set up your camp for the night here. Unlike the route this place will have natural waterbodies and streams flowing at some spots. Another place worth visiting is the Rizdong monastery that is one hour from Yangthang in the South direction.

Day 3
Yangthang – Tsermangchan La (12715 ft) – Hemis Shukpachan
Day three will be an easy walk. This trail half way until Tsermangchan pass is a downward hike. After a short while, you will head towards west, towards the pass, this will be an upward hike. Enroute you will cross a stream as well. Rest for a while at the pass and then descend towards Hemis Shukpachan. This village is rich in evergreen cedar and is one of the most beautiful villages of Ladakh. You will see vast meadows and locals with few grocery stores around for daily needs. The green fields and the willow and poplar trees add to the beauty of the place.

Day 4
Hemis shukpachan to Temisgam
Day four is the final day of the trek. You will hike upwards towards the west of the village until the route deviates and leads south. From here you will reach the Mebtak La (3750 m). You will see the pass marked by beautiful and colourful prayer flags. This scene will give you a calmness and peace od mind. From here you go downwards toward the village of Ang. This region is rich in fruits like apricot and apples and you will see them everywhere. Large apricot orchids can bee seen from far away. Enjoy the landscape, rest for a while here and then from hear head towards Temisgam. Your journey comes to an end once you hit the highway. From here you will alight you cars and return back to Leh.

Departure from Leh
